2012 Kansas Poverty Report
“The Kansas Association of Community Action Programs recently released an updated Kansas Report on Poverty. This report is valuable in educating all people on the plight of the more than 25% of our Kansas population currently living at or below 125% of the FPL. Every person should be an advocate for the over 160,000 Kansans living in extreme poverty. Everyone should be aware that this epidemic of poverty infects every segment of Kansas life.
Weatherization Day Celebrated October 30th is National Weatherization Day, and the Southeast Kansas Community Action Program (SEK-CAP) is proud to acknowledge the success of its Weatherization Program. This Department of Energy program reduces the burden of high utilities on low-income families by installing cost-effective, energy efficiency measures in their homes. Low-income families pay 17% of their annual incomes for energy compared with 4% for other households. Thus far, in 2011, SEK-CAP has weatherized a total of 229 homes across Southeast Kansas. These households save an average of $218 annually on their energy bills after the weatherization work is completed. The dollar savings alone make a big difference for the families; yet they also benefit from a warmer (or cooler) and safer home, all of which impacts the families daily. Weatherization also benefits the entire community by keeping more money in the local economy (rather than "exporting" energy dollars), employing trained weatherization crews and contractors, reducing power plant emissions, and improving the local environment. Taken together, every $1.00 invested in the Weatherization program, returns $2.72 in energy and non-energy related benefits. Weatherization technicians use computerized energy audits and advanced diagnostic technologies, such as blower doors and duct blasters, to determine the most cost-effective measures for each home. They also assess related health and safety conditions, such as carbon monoxide and gas leaks. Please enjoy the following video, further describing the impact of the program.
